THE POWER OF CHILDREN AWARDS: MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Do you know a young person making an extraordinary difference in the lives of others or in the community through volunteerism and demonstration of good citizenship? This is a call to nominate the extraordinary work of Hoosier youth for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis' Power of Children awards. Nominations are currently being sought throughout Indiana for youth in grades 6-11.

The Power of Children Awards were created in 2005 in conjunction with The Children's Museum of Indianapolis' new permanent exhibit, The Power of Children: Making a Difference scheduled to open in late 2007. The purpose of the awards is to help children and families realize that while some children are recognized nationally and internationally for their actions, there are many in our own communities whose good deeds too often go unnoticed. Award recipients will receive a $2,000.00 cash reward to continue their extraordinary project and receive a post-secondary educational scholarship to an Indiana-based institution of higher learning.

Please visit www.ChildrensMuseum.org/PowerOfChildren for more information and download a complete application. You may also call the museum's Customer Service Center at 317-334-4000 to have information and an application mailed to you.

LEARNING TO GIVE-INDIANA: GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS!
Learning to Give - Indiana, a program of the Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University, is a kindergarten through 12th grade educational program that teaches young people about philanthropy. It started being implemented in Indiana schools in the fall of 2004 and is growing faster than expected. The program, which consists of curriculum and standards-based lessons for classroom teachers, had a goal of reaching 15 Indiana schools by 2006.  To the delight of everyone involved, Learning to Give has reached 30 schools and continues to grow.  The Learning to Give schools are located in Indianapolis, Bloomington, Brownsburg, Carmel, New Albany, Clarksville, Scottsburg, Corydon, and Whiteland.  We hope to double our amount by next year.  For more information about this wonderful philanthropy program and the schools that are involved, go to http://www.learningtogive.org

YOUNG HOOSIER PHILANTHROPISTS
The E-Chronicle will feature a monthly highlight of Young Hoosier Philanthropists who are doing outstanding work in giving their time, talent and treasure for the common good.  Organizations across Indiana are invited to send an article describing the young person and the outstanding work they are doing (100-150 words).

Please send a picture by e-mail if possible that we can include with the article to jfinn@ypin.org.  These outstanding young philanthropists will be featured in the E-Chronicle as well as be archived on our web site so that other Hoosier youth can be inspired from the good work they do.

Our first Young Hoosier Philanthropist to be featured is Daniel Kent (pictured), a junior at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis who became aware of the isolation of many older people.  With $4,000 he had saved for a car, he founded Senior Connects, a youth-managed program that addresses the need for senior citizens to become more computer savvy. By fall of 2005, he had raised more than $120,000 in cash and computers and created a network of 100 high-school student volunteers to teach almost 11,000 seniors to utilize computers to keep in touch with family members through email, learn more about areas of interest or find out about services and events in the community. Senior Connects is now one of four programs offered - under a re-named corporate umbrella www.netliteracy.org.  ABC Network recently flew crews in from NYC and LA to Indianapolis to do a show on Net Literacy.  Daniel and his network of high school volunteers are outstanding Young Hoosier Philanthropists!
