YP Jam Participants Honor O'Bannons with School Supplies
Participants at the YP Jam 2004 did more than just attend a conference; they did community service in the process. Participants brought school supplies to be given to "Teachers Treasures", a charitable organization that donates school supplies for children who might not have enough when school starts as well as for teachers who work in areas of need. Sarah Boyd, one of the coordinators of the YP Jam said, "We wanted to do something to make a difference in the community. The youth thought this would be a great way to honor the O'Bannons, who have given and served so well." The supplies were presented to Judy O'Bannon in honor of
her dedication to education as well as that of the late Governor Frank O'Bannon.
HAMILTON COUNTY YOUTH AWARD $8,100 TO SEVEN ORGANIZATIONS THROUGH LEGACY FUND LINK YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL
Fifteen teenagers from various Hamilton County schools learned how everyday things like a teddy bear, refrigerator, or a meal can make an enormous difference in someone' s life.
Since 1999, Legacy Fund has led teens through a grantmaking process to evaluate and discuss grant proposals and work with a budget to award grants to organizations serving Hamilton County. The Link Youth Advisory Council was created in 2002 as a way to connect philanthropy to our youth beyond the grantmaking process. The Link Council works directly with the Legacy Fund Board of Governors and has a youth representative on the Legacy Fund Grant Distribution Committee.
Kristin Arfman, Council Co-chairperson states, " Building the Link Youth Advisory Council group has given us all a way to reach out and grow. It allows us an opportunity we may not have normally had to make a positive difference in someone else's life; and to know this difference is made in our own communities makes being part of this group more of a privilege than actual work."
For more information on the Legacy Fund, go to our web site at www.ypin.org and go to map and click on Hamilton County.

In a session on civic engagement at the YP Jam participants had a chance to cast their vote on issues facing young people today. Here are the results:
- If elections were held today, George W. Bush would be elected by a narrow margin of 46% to 44% of the votes, with Nader receiving 10% of the votes. Joe Kernan would be re-elected to a second term as governor with 58% of the votes.
- 55% said that the U.S should not have entered the war with Iraq and 85% said that there should not be a mandatory draft with our continued efforts in Iraq.
- When it came to community service, 70% of the participants said that community service should be mandatory for high school graduation. 56% said that there should be a law stating that two years of service (military, Peace Corps, Americorps, teaching in inner city or rural areas, etc.) is required in exchange for two to four years of college being paid for by the government.
- An overwhelming amount voted that the minimum wage should be raised to $6.25 and the age to get your driver's license in Indiana should not be raised to 18 years old.

Indiana and Michigan Youth Workers are First to See New Material Being Used With Youth Philanthropy Across the United States
Indiana and Michigan youth workers from community based organizations, faith based programs and governmental agencies are being offered a "sneak preview" of exciting new materials being produced for youth and philanthropy programs across the United States. Community Partnerships with Youth Inc. has partnered with Council of Michigan Foundation's Learning to Give program to develop training and activity modules which will help youth work successfully in adult and community partnerships as philanthropists and trustees. Forty different activities have been broken into 4 different segments: Active Citizenship, the Basics of Philanthropy, Environment and Human
Nature and "Heros and Sheros." Each activity has a theme, intended outcomes and a step-by-step process for implementing the activity. Most activities take between 30 - 90 minutes to complete.
Youth groups and youth serving organizations that want to receive these new materials are being asked to participate in a field test being held throughout Indiana and Michigan from August - October, 2004. Participants will be asked to give feedback in a survey that will accompany the training module. Once the field tests are completed, each module will be published on a web portal where groups will be acknowledged for their contribution. Anyone who is interested should contact Lisa Patterson, National Training Director, Community Partnerships with Youth Inc. at 317-875-5756 or email Lisa at lpatterson@cpyinc.org.
