Looking for Stories from Young Leaders (ages 12 - 30)
The Search Institute and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation want to learn more about youth participation and activism in community life, and how that work can be linked to be more effective in creating sustainable and meaningful change. The information will help direct future work with the Kellogg Foundation and specifically their newest initiative, Kellogg Leadership for Community Change. It will also be shared with the 500+ Healthy Communities - Healthy Youth coalitions that are connected to the Search Institute. Please visit:

St. Richard's School hosts Leadership Forum
"Growing Lifelong Leaders" was the theme of a day long leadership forum using youth philanthropy as the context for about 70 middle school students from fourteen center city schools in Indianapolis. The event was hosted by St. Richards and high school youth leaders helped facilitate it.

Featured speakers included Amy Altemeyer, a sophomore from Brebeuf High School, Ms. Jane Henegar, Deputy Mayor of the City of Indianapolis, and Jackie Nytes, Indianapolis City-County Councilwoman. Carolyn Lausch, Academic Dean at St. Richards was the driving force behind the event. Leadership development through youth philanthropy was the focus of the sessions.

Students left the day excited about their "home work"; to implement a community service project for their school. For more information, contact Carolyn Lausch at clausch@strichardsschool.org.

Youth Voter Turnout Up Sharply in 2004
The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at the University of Maryland has already compiled initial results on youth voter turnout. They show that about 20.9 million Americans under the age of 30 voted in 2004, an increase of 4.6 million over 2000, and the turnout rate among these voters rose from about 42.3% to 51.6%, a sharp rise of 9.3 percentage points, according to final national exit polls and an early tally of votes cast.

Because young people participated in considerably larger numbers than they had in the past, they kept pace with the higher turnout of Americans of all ages. Voters under the age of 30 constituted the same proportion of all voters as they did in 2000. In the ten most debated states, youth turnout was 64%, up 13 percentage points from 2000.
