JA "WALKS THE TALK" The staff at Junior Achievement of Central Indiana (JACI) recently decided to "walk its talk" after providing over 500 youth with a summer camp experience directed at Philanthropy. Stephanie Stilson, JA Education Specialist, commented "there will be no staff gift
exchange or holiday party this year, and we're thrilled! Instead, we've adopted a local family. It feels good!"
STUDENTS GET LIFE LESSON Volunteers learn about philanthropy firsthand LAWRENCE -- To celebrate National Philanthropy Day, students from various Lawrence Township schools collected donations for the Growing Our Community's Caring project and established a Community Wish Center for the township's needy.
"It's kind of nice to get a little break from school and come down here and do a good thing," said Lawrence Central High School senior Chandler Dillman, 18. "Helping people puts you in a good mood."
From 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 15, students and other community volunteers accepted donations of bedding, children's books, coats, winter clothing, canned goods, baby needs, and cash at the Lawrence Township Foundation Office, 5626 Lawton Loop E. Drive. The project was part of the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana (YPII), which allows young people to give back to the community. SAVING THE WORLD, ONE PHILANTHROPIST AT A TIME Teens representing Youth As Resources of Allen County, participated in a youth philanthropy retreat in Shipshewana, Indiana, October 22-23. The theme of the retreat, sponsored by the Dekko Foundation, was ‘The Adventures of
SuperPhil.' When it came time to deliver their presentation about the YAR program in Allen County, they turned into their alter-egos - LEADgirl and LEADboy.
LEADgirl and LEADboy shared information about the guidelines YAR follows when making grants to other organizations. They also facilitated a philanthropy activity demonstrating ways to effectively ask for money and be good stewards for those with money to give. "Participating in the Dekko retreat was a neat experience," said Andre Bobb. "We got people excited about what we do at YAR, and we learned ideas to further our own philanthropy efforts in Fort Wayne."
