FOUNDATION CENTER LAUNCHES YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY WEBSITE From experts in the field to parents and teachers, many of us recognize the importance of involving youth in charitable activities in order to educate and encourage the next generation of
committed philanthropists--both at home and abroad. To help in these efforts, The Foundation Center created Youth in Philanthropy, a page on the Foundation Center's Web site that serves as a resource for young people and those interested in cultivating young volunteers, nonprofit decision-makers, and philanthropists of all kinds. Here you'll find information on philanthropy, the Foundation Center and how it accomplishes its mission, links to famous and celebrity philanthropists' Web sites, ideas for how young people can get involved in causes they care about, resources for adults in youth service, and a form visitors can use to post their own stories about how they've participated in
philanthropic activities in their communities and farther afield. Go to www.fdncenter.org and click on the Youth In Philanthropy page.
Volunteers are needed for planning the Second Annual Governor's Conference on Service and Volunteerism, October 6 and 7, 2004, in Indianapolis. Community Partnerships with Youth Inc, has an exciting new partnership with the Learning to Give (LTG) Initiative of the Council of Michigan Foundations. A user-friendly Web site and complimentary training for youth-serving workers with downloadable, fun, interactive, and easy to use resources will be developed on youth philanthropy. Let CPY know if you are interested in providing ideas to help
develop the youth in philanthropy portal. They would love to hear from you. The more ideas, the richer the content.
CPY, a YPII training and resource partner, also has new staff and new training opportunities. Lisa Patterson, CPY's new Training and Marketing Director, has been involved with YPII before. It is good to have her involved again. Here is a brief glimpse of a couple of CPY's creative ideas for what you may want to do in your community: • Workshops tailor-made for your community to involve your governmental and city officials; • Empowering youth and adults to partner in decision-making roles and developing meaningful relationships; • Families from all walks of life can be important
contributors to our communities and at the same time, strengthen the family and reinforce important values through a Family Philanthropy Workshop. Contact CPY at cpyinc@aol.com or go to their Web site at www.cpy.org for more information. |

"Philanthropy BUZZ" -- a resource to answer your questions about youth philanthropy
Submit your questions for any of the YPII partners. If you have a question for "Philanthropy Buzz" email us.
Question: How do I involve young people in fund development?
BuZZ: Young people do fundraising all the time for a variety of projects, and are very effective when they believe in the cause. Help them understand the differece between fundraising and comprehensive fund development. Involve them from the very beginning. Get their ideas on how they would like to raise money and who they know that might be willing to contribute. Train them on how to ask for a contribution. Set appointments with potential donors, and go with the young people, but let them explain what the funds are for and how a contribution will help. Involve them in designing and putting together a
mail appeal. Partners of the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana will gladly answer your questions and the Indiana Youth Institute has a toll free helpline: 877-IYI-TIPS, that gives free professional advice on fundraising, legal matters, and effective ways to work with youth. This response is brought to you by Community Partnerships with Youth Inc. and YPII. For more information on CPY visit their website at www.cpyinc.org.
