Power of Children Awards The Power of Children Awards Celebration held on December 5th
recognized four outstanding young Hoosier philanthropists as part of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’ new permanent exhibit, The Power of Children: Making a Difference scheduled to open in late 2007. The purpose of the awards is to help children and families realize that while some children are recognized nationally and internationally for their actions, there are many in our own communities whose good deeds too often go unnoticed. The 2006 Power of Children
award winners include: Sarah Boesing (Floyd County), Matt Ciulla (Marion County), Riley Curry (Monroe County), and Shelby Mitchell (Hendricks County). In addition to receiving a cash recognition award of $2,000 to further empower their extraordinary work, each winner will be awarded a Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholarship to be used for post-secondary education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Each youth will also be featured as one of YPII’s young Hoosier Philanthropists during 2007. Congratulations to each recipient and all the nominees for giving of their time, talent and treasure for the common good!

Young Hoosier Philanthropists A 17-year-old junior at the Christian Academy of Indiana in New Albany, Sarah Boesing received The Children’s Museum Power of Children
award in December, 2006. Over a three-year period, Sarah conceived and developed a program called “Break the Grey” to benefit critically ill children. She assembled gift baskets for cancer and kidney patients to brighten their day while in the hospital. Through Sarah’s deep concern for children with kidney and cancer ailments and because of her own personal experience, she was able to bring joy to children by giving a party on the “kidney floor” at Louisville’s Kosair Children’s Hospital last January. Over 80 baskets and bundles were distributed to ailing children. She plans to increase her giving to Riley Children’s Hospital in
Indianapolis this year. “With my Power of Children award, I will expand the program by giving bigger and better gifts to the patients and their families,” Sarah said. Sarah has been featured several times in southern Indiana newspapers for her compassion and generosity and was also a recipient of the Gold Acorn Award presented by the Youth Philanthropy Councils of the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana in 2006.

Youth in Philanthropy Summit
We failed to mention last month that the North American Youth in Philanthropy Summit was organized by the Association of Fund Raising Professionals (AFP). The purpose of the Summit was to bring together the leading organizations involved in youth philanthropy efforts in order to learn what each is doing and the resources each has developed; to create a collaborative vision for working together and sharing ideas; and to develop the action steps for collaboration. A “white paper” will be produced by AFP in collaboration with the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and a potential consortium will be considered to provide the ongoing leadership to advance the common
agenda for the Youth in Philanthropy movement.
