Community Foundation Endowment Building through Youth Fundraising
Youth fundraising has successfully increased the youth philanthropy endowments for Crawford, Scott, Washington, Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties. YPII's Matching Fund Opportunity, made possible by a generous gift from the Paul Ogle Foundation, was the incentive for youth to raise a total of $70,000 within their communities. The matching $70,000 gift will strengthen the region's youth philanthropy endowments, while the funds raised by the youth will be used for grantmaking and community service projects. That's a total of $140,000 raised for this great cause!
Youth-driven fundraising ideas that proved to be successful included slam dunk contests, Harlem Ambassadors basketball games, raffles, dollar drives, GoodSearch.com earnings, school hat days and sales of all sorts (youth reported selling candles, baked goods, candy, concessions, artwork and stocking stuffers).

The young philanthropists learned the skill of "making the ask" by writing letters of request to potential individual donors and corporations, as well as submitting small grant proposals to foundations. Personal contributions from the youth were included as a key part of the fundraising effort.

Young Hoosier Philanthropists: Lanesville Jr./Sr. High School
We salute students at Lanesville Jr./Sr. High School for knowing what it means to be a young Hoosier philanthropist. From learning about service in the classroom to making a difference in their community, these kids are giving of their time, talent and treasure.
This year, 41 seniors took a service-learning class and then shared their lessons with middle school students. These same 12th-graders also have been paired with elementary-aged children for a mentoring program.
All across the school, students and faculty gathered food, gift and monetary donations in support of the Lanesville Elf Project. Their efforts provided meals, clothes and toys for 20 local families this holiday season.

Students also give and serve by participating in the Renaissance Club, which stresses academic excellence and community service. This summer they'll have a chance to volunteer at the "World on the Square" family festival, a local introduction to the world's diverse countries and ethnic groups.
Way to go Eagles! |

Pay It Forward Mini-Grants
Pay It Forward Mini-Grants are designed to fund one-time-only service-oriented projects identified by youth as activities they would like to perform to benefit their school, neighborhood or greater community. Projects must contain a "pay it forward" focus - that is, they must be based on the concept of one person doing a favor for others, who in turn do favors for others, with the results growing exponentially - to be considered in the grantmaking process. Applications for the spring semester are being accepted through February 15.

UnitedHealth HEROES Service-Learning Grants UnitedHealthcare and Youth Service America are excited to offer the UnitedHealth HEROES service-learning grant program for youth-led community education projects.
