Young Hoosier Philanthropist: Nikieia Fitzpatrick
When teen Nikieia Fitzpatrick recognized that younger children needed help reading, she started a Reading Club for youth in grades 2-4 at the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Indiana. The program was so successful that it has now expanded from its original two days, to five days a week. Fitzpatrick, a student at Edison Jr./Sr. High School in Lake Station, Indiana, says, "I believe a strong impact was made by letting children's minds open to what the pages of a book contain. With this program they see that they're not just pages in a book, but a whole new world they haven't yet explored." Nikieia was a 2005 recipient of the Power of Children Award from the Children's Museum.

Legacy Foundation YPC Awards Grants
After meeting for more than a year, the Youth Philanthropy Council of the Legacy Foundation recently awarded over $2,000 in its first round of grants to local non-profits in Lake County. The Youth Philanthropy Council is comprised of teens representing various Rotary Clubs in Lake County, and was initiated through fundraising efforts in matching funds with Moore Foundation/YPII Rotary Challenge Grant.
