Young Hoosier Philanthropist- Angelica JacksonAngelica Jackson
Angelica Jackson is a great young Hoosier Philanthropist.  She has been active in the Jeffersonville Youth Commission, NAACP, Clark County Youth Philanthropy Council, and Point of Youth.  Her school leadership involvement includes student government, serving as a class officer, Anchor Club, and Tri-Hi-Y Honor Society Community Service Group. She states that volunteer work has always been her passion. In addition to her volunteer work, she works part-time and loves to read about African cultures and to study traditional Yoruba religion. She has been the president of the Jeffersonville Clark County Youth Council since 2003 and has worked diligently to become a good role model for youth in her community.

Jam2007You Too Make a Difference- at the 2007 YP Jam

Nothing motivates youth like a fun-filled exciting event where they can see how cool it is that others across Indiana are becoming active young philanthropists.  The 2007 YP Jam: You Too Make a Difference is the place to be in July.  Registration Deadline is quickly approaching and you can register online. Please contact Jerry Finn or Eileen Ryan if a scholarship is needed.  Again this year, the Great Grant-Super Service Activity session at the conference will provide an opportunity for groups to receive cash awards to continue their good works. Criteria and information is available on YPII's website.  Download the electronic YP Jam 2007 brochure (PDF).

A special thanks to The Indianapolis Foundation, Paul E. Ogle Foundation, WXIN FOX59, Harrison County Community Foundation, Caesars Foundation of Floyd County and the Partners Network for assistance with scholarship funding.

Growing Funds for Local Communities
A significant focus of the YPII mission is to help sustain local youth philanthropy efforts.  By engaging the support of key funders (Lilly Endowment, Moore Foundation & 10 Family Foundations), YPII is proud to announce recipients of the Matching Fund Opportunity for enhancing and building assets in local communities.  These funds will be allocated for:

  • Initiating a new youth philanthropy program
  • Establishing an endowment for youth philanthropy
  • Increasing the growth of a current youth philanthropy endowment

Organizations applied for over $100,000 worth of matching funds.  $65,000 was the amount made available through our funders for this matching fund opportunity and the following organizations received funding: Benton Community Foundation, Putnam County Community Foundation, Rush County Community Foundation, Youth Leadership Hendricks County, DeKalb County Community Foundation, Leadership Fort Wayne (YAR), Legacy Foundation, Montgomery County Youth Services Bureau, Noble County Community Foundation, Wabash Valley Community Foundation, Youth As Resources of Central Indiana, Youth As Resources of Wayne County, Youth As Resources of Wells County, Floyd County Community Foundation, and Clark County Community Foundation. Four recipients are new endeavors in their county. Due to this opportunity $130,000 will be leveraged in local communities for youth philanthropy!

"Building the Annual Fund"
About 80 percent of all donated dollars come from individuals - not foundations or the government.  Learn how to tap into this resource at a free training on fundraising. "Building the Annual Fund," taught by Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy Fund Raising School. The session will teach you which strategies to use with certain donors, how to make a convincing case for their support, how to use your volunteers for fundraising and how to use your time effectively. Seats are still available in:  New Albany (June 7-8) and Lawrenceburg (June 11-12). Register:  http://www.iyi.org/trainings

Incorporating Youth Philanthropy in Existing Programs
Often times, when asked about youth philanthropy, the immediate reaction is, “I know it is important, but I don’t have the  time or staff to start another program.”  Change the perspective.  Maybe the best approach is that of a community convener which encourages local organizations to include youth philanthropy in existing programs.  Many youth-serving organizations, youth leadership programs, schools etc. in your community could enrich their activities & curricula with philanthropic concepts integrated into their already wonderful programs.  Be the catalyst to infuse youth philanthropy throughout the community.  For more ideas on incorporating youth philanthropy into existing community programs and for free resources, visit the YPII web site www.ypin.org.
