YPII Jam
"Philanthropy, the Extreme Experience"

July 6-7, 2004
Cost: $30.00
Franklin College, Franklin Indiana

The 2004 Youth Philanthropy Conference is shaping up to be a "extreme experience" for participants.  This fun filled, action packed, information loaded, overnight event being planned by youth and adults is one you will not want to miss!  The event will include active engagement in giving and serving through donation of school supplies to the O'Bannon Foundation.  These supplies will be involved in a unique selection process to determine the best grant given by Indiana youth grantmakers.  Participants will be given the opportunity to vote with actual machines and ballots for a mock presidential election, and also to vote on youth issues that are most important to them.  Quality workshops with dynamic speakers are planned, and more information will be available soon.

LEARNING TO GIVE

A glimpse of the Learning to Give project in action is provided here by a teacher at St. Richard's School, in Indianapolis.  St. Richard's just signed on as a "partner school" with the Learning to Give program.  For more information, see www.learningtogive.org or contact Eileen Ryan.

"Part of the Learning to Give lesson I am teaching is thinking up acts of kindness for all 26 letters of the alphabet.  Last week the kids started to do some of these "random acts of kindness" around home and at school.  This week I am trying to encourage them to continue their "random acts of kindness."

For instance, last week, Mr. Harrison, our headmaster, picked up a piece of trash as my student walked into the school.  Without thinking the student said, "Mr. Harrison, I will throw that away for you."   The student came running into the room as if he had just won the lottery!  He was so excited!"

"Philanthropy BUZZ" -- a resource to answer your questions about youth philanthropy

Submit your questions for any of the YPII partners.  If you have a question for "Philanthropy Buzz" email us.

Question:  We heard some buzz about "giving circles."  We would like to learn more, and especially about how youth might become involved.

BuZZ:  Giving Circles can serve as a great way to multiply your impact and have fun at the same time!  A Giving Circle is a creative way for a group of people (who can certainly be youth) to come together and pool their resources.  The emphasis is not on the size of the gift, but on the decision to fund a good cause as a group.

Here is a sketch of how it works:

- Decide when you will start, and who will be involved.
- Decide on your cause and your target goal as a group.
- Each individual decides their level of contribution.
- Collect your donations and notify the media when you donate to your cause.
- Evaluate what worked well and what you may want to do differently.
- Be creative and have fun!
