The Power of Children Awards: Making a Difference
Do you know a young person making an extraordinary difference in the lives of others or in the community through volunteerism and demonstration of good citizenship? This is a call to nominate the extraordinary work of Hoosier Youth for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’ Power of Children
awards. Nominations are currently being sought throughout Indiana for youth in grades 6-11. The Power of Children Awards were created in 2005 in conjunction with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’ new permanent exhibit, The Power of Children: Making a Difference
scheduled to open in late 2007. The purpose of the awards is to help children and families realize that while some children are recognized nationally and internationally for their actions, there are many in our own communities whose good deeds too often go unnoticed. Award recipients will receive a cash reward to continue their extraordinary project and receive a post-secondary educational scholarship to an Indiana based institution of higher learning.
Please go to www.ChildrensMuseum.org/PowerOfChildren for more information and to download a complete application. You may also call the museum’s Customer Service Center at 317-334-4000 to have one mailed to you. Application Deadline: March 24, 2007.
Young Hoosier Philanthropist - Riley Curry
Riley Curry is a 17-year-old junior who attends Bloomington High School South. After witnessing the plight of several homeless people during extreme weather conditions, Riley decided he needed to do something to help them. Through his concern for others, he developed the “Sunday Shalom Breakfast Program” to feed the homeless. The overall goal of the program is to provide nourishment and provide a gathering place to nurture their souls. The program has grown from 19 recipients to more than 50. A recipient of the distinguished “Power of Children Award,” Riley continues to use his resources to serve the less fortunate, and has mobilized many in his congregation
to help serve those in need every week. To view an interview of Riley Curry by WISH-TV 8, visit http://www.childrensmuseum.org/special_events/powerofchildren/2006winners.htm |

Schools Making a Difference
Break-O-Day Elementary school is a rural school in New Whiteland, Indiana with a student population of 450. Over 50% of the children are on free and reduced lunches. However, what they did during a Thanksgiving drive truly demonstrated the power of giving; that age and socioeconomic background don’t have to be barriers when it comes to caring about others. The students donated $27,471 worth of clothes to needy families in Johnson County. Later they gave an additional $11,269 in food donations and volunteer time to their community.
These service projects were implemented due to their participation in The LEAGUE, a program for schools that educates young people about the importance of philanthropy, the nonprofit sector and civic engagement. For more information, go to the YPII web site and click on Links, then The LEAGUE. |
