2010 ButtonSave the Date: Adventures in Philanthropy
YPII and GIFT (Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow) will team up again in Summer 2010 to share and reinforce the power of youth philanthropy with the state's community foundations. "Adventures in Philanthropy" will take place on Thursday, July 22 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in Indianapolis.  The program is intended for:

  • community foundation executives and program directors who work directly or indirectly with youth philanthropy groups;
  • youth who participate in youth philanthropy councils and committees; and
  • community foundations interested in convening community leaders around the topic of a youth philanthropy collaborative in their community.

More details to come!

Civic Engagement Opportunity: Fort Wayne Mayor's Youth Council
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry announced the formation of the Mayor's Youth Engagement Council, which will be a group of up to 25 high school students focusing on service learning. The council members will identify ways they can address some of the community's most urgent issues through connections with stakeholders in non-profit organizations, business corridors and youth agencies.

With written applications due April 5, student members must be sophomores, juniors or seniors for the 2010-2011 school year. Sitting on the council will require a 12-month commitment.  All council members must live within the city and attend public, private or home schools. The application - which requires student information, two adult references and parent/guardian permission - is available at: www.cityoffortwayne.org/myec

A New Addition for Misty
Misty Stanley, YPII Program Consultant, and her husband Seth recently celebrated the arrival of their second child.  Baby Lucas was born on Wednesday, March 3 at 10:48 a.m.  He weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. and was 21.5" long.  Congratulations, Misty!

Young Hoosier Philanthropist: Michelle Stevens
Michelle Stevens, a Providence Cristo Rey High School (PCRHS) junior, has a very busy life as a student and employee, but is dedicated to finding time to give back to her community.  In addition to tackling a college-prep curriculum and an internship at Allied Solutions in Indianapolis, Michelle is a volunteer and community leader.  She participates in the PCRHS Christian Service Learning program and organizes outreach activities for her youth group.  Michelle also has been a steward of philanthropic funds through her work with student council.

When the group received a $1000 grant to use for a worthy cause, Michelle called on her personal volunteer experience to make a recipient suggestion.  Having previously worked with the Centered Around Christ Wagon Ministry, which distributes sandwiches and beverages to Indianapolis's homeless every day, she knew firsthand how much good $1000 could do for her needy neighbors.

Through school, church and community involvement, Michelle Stevens is demonstrating what it means to be a philanthropist.  We applaud her efforts to make her community a better place!
