Young Hoosier Philanthropist: Brian Williams, Hendricks County
Brian Williams is a junior at Cascade High School in Clayton, Indiana's Mill Creek School system. "Brian is one of those people that your life is better because you know him," says Dianne Murer, Hendricks County YAR Coordinator.
As a seventh grader, Brian got involved refurbishing the old Interurban station into a library for the community. Youth as Resources nominated Brian that year to serve on its youth/adult partnership board. The board was impressed with Brian and his passion to serve. Brian will tell you he doesn't think about the things that he does, he says, "its things I just sort of expect out of myself, and don't really consider it volunteering; it's what I do." Brian has served on the board since and is now co-chair of the local action board and on the governing board of Youth as Resources Central Indiana. Brian has a long history of volunteering; at the Danville Library doing
puppet shows and reading to "much younger" youth and building sets and performing in plays at the Hendricks Civic Theater. He helped teach space camp at Van Buren Elementary in Plainfield, was involved in fund raising for the Amo Volunteer Fire Department, the YP Jam, and so much more. He truly knows, believes, and lives the definition he has learned for philanthropy-"giving of your time, talent and treasures for the common good."

National Philanthropy Day
November 15th is National Philanthropy Day, and a great opportunity to promote youth philanthropy in your local community! How?
- Ask your mayor to declare November 15th as Philanthropy Day in your community.
- Ask youth to write news articles on how giving and serving has benefited them and the community, or highlight youth who are involved in community service.
- Organize a community service project in which youth give their time, talent, and treasure for the good of the community.
- Work with your library to put together a philanthropy exhibit showcasing materials on giving and serving.
- Distribute "Giving Game" cards to students, and write an article for your local newspaper on the value to a community when everyone does good deeds for others.
Let us know what is planned in your community and we will highlight it in the E-Chronicle next month! |
