Marshall Co BEAM New Marshall County Youth Organization
After months of planning and organization, a new youth philanthropy group has emerged in Marshall County.  BEAM (Bettering Every Aspect of Marshall County) has recruited 14 initial members to perform community-based service projects and award grants benefiting youth.  The founders are pictured at right in front of a Marshall County lighthouse.  The lighthouse was selected as their symbol based on their desire to be beams of light throughout their community.  Read the full story

YP Trainings
Interested in having someone talk with your board or donors about youth philanthropy?  Or maybe a training event for community partners about the value of engaging youth in giving and serving would hit the spot.  "Youth as Fundraisers and Endowment Builders" is a timely topic for community groups.

Through YPII, youth philanthropy trainings are being offered at a reasonable, discounted cost for foundations, youth-serving groups, schools and faith-based organizations/congregations.  Trainings are tailored to the needs of local organizations on their topic(s) of choice.  For additional information on trainings to fit your local community needs, contact Eileen Ryan at 317.630.5200.

YP Ambassadors

Youth Philanthropy Ambassadors will have two opportunities for orientation in 2009.  A 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. session will take place in Indianapolis on Friday, January 23, and in New Albany on Friday, April 17.

YP Ambassadors will receive valuable information, tools and resources to serve local communities across Indiana and promote the concept of philanthropy among children, youth and young adults.  Thanks to our generous sponsors, these high quality events are available for a nominal fee of $25.00 per participant.  Participants will receive nearly $1,000 in quality resources to share and use in their local communities.  To register or to get more information about the YP Ambassador Program, go to: www.ypin.org

New Youth Philanthropy Endowment Fund in Wells County

Congratulations to Family Centered Services, Youth As Resources and the Wells County Foundation for the creation of a new youth philanthropy endowment fund!   Family Centered Services, Inc. participated in the 2007-08 YPII Matching Fund Opportunity to establish the fund on behalf of Youth As Resources.

In order to receive the maximum matching grant available from YPII, the team had to raise $5,000.  They did so with persistence and creativity, holding a 2007 Dollar Drive and securing donations from a local bank, various community organizations, individuals and the Wells County Foundation.  The youths' efforts were matched by YPII with the help of generous Matching Fund Opportunity donors.  The grand total of $10,000 was placed in a youth philanthropy endowment fund with Wells County Foundation.  According to Tammy Slater, CEO at Wells County, "The leadership of our local youth philanthropy initiative has taken a major step in ensuring that a perpetual funding source exists for their programming."

Young Hoosier Philanthropists: Claire Helmen & the JA BizCamp Campers
Claire Helmen had a desire to comfort traumatized children.  She thought being wrapped up in a nice, warm blanket might help calm the fears of young victims.  To put the plan into motion, this Indianapolis sixth-grader teamed up with Junior Achievement's JA JA BlanketsBizCamp, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Over the course of the summer, JA campers (age 9-14) created hundreds of blankets for Claire's Comfort for Kids.  As they learned about philanthropy through their curriculum, they put the principles to work.  At the end of their sessions, students presented their blankets to an IMPD officer.  The blankets were then given to first responders who will bring the vision full circle.
