HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF EFFORTS
The natural disaster from Hurricane Katrina provides an opportunity for all citizens to help those in need. Network for Good lists several orgainzations that are accepting donations to help the hurricane victims.

One way to talk to children about this natural disaster is by using the Disaster Preparedness Coloring Book, which can be downloaded for free from Network for Good's Web site. The coloring book is designed for adults and children to work together on. Children can learn about natural disasters, as well as how to protect themselves while coloring.

Listed below are a couple of specific resources in the area that have been created to help hurricane victims:

The Greater New Orleans Foundation has established a fund to receive on-line contributions for hurricane relief in that community.  Go to the foundation's Web site (www.gnof.org) and click on Hurricane Katrina Recovery Fund.

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation announced the establishment of two new funds in response to the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Katrina to southeast Louisiana. Tax deductible donations to one or both of these funds are now being accepted online at www.braf.org.

GREAT GRANTS/SUPER SERVICE AWARD GOES TO MADISON CO. YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY AT YP JAM 05
A $500 "Great Grant-Super Service Activity Award, courtesy of Anthem, was presented to the Youth Leadership Academy of Madison County for their "Battle of the Bands" philanthropy project. Twenty-six high school juniors who were "graduating" from the Madison County Youth Leadership Academy decided to have a "Battle of the Bands" event to raise funds to grant to deserving Madison County youth organizations for community service. Their goal was to raise $1,000. Because of outstanding planning and commitment to the youth, the first class event raised $5,000 which was granted to nine great service projects. The project was collaboration with the schools, Center for Character Development and community businesses. Congratulations to these outstanding young people and thank you Anthem for your generous gift to the YP Jam!

JA INCORPORATES PHILANTHROPY IN BIZ CAMP
Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, Inc. (JACI) offered a curriculum-based (yet fun!) summer camp this year and partnered with Learning to Give, YPII, Drive of Your Life, NCAA, and others to explore entrepreneurship, financial literacy, & philanthropy. Why would JA pick philanthropy? Campers tried to image Indianapolis without the buildings funded by philanthropic dollars -- without workers educated with private scholarships -- without inventions & research developed by philanthropic initiatives. Well, you get the picture, and so did nearly 400 campers. Philanthropy isn't just a nice thing; rather, it's a defining characteristic of a successful American economy. That's a pretty powerful message for Indiana's youth to hear! Stephanie Stilson, Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, Inc. (JACI), 252-5900 ext. 226,

YOUNG HOOSIER RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY!
Daniel Kent, 16, of Carmel, Ind., a sophomore at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis, has received national recognition for creating a nonprofit corporation dedicated to promoting computer and Internet literacy among senior citizens. Daniel, who for several years has taught both seniors and elementary school students how to use computers and the Internet, realized one day that there were many seniors who lacked the mobility or transportation to come to his classes. When he discovered that there were no programs in his area to address this need, and that local senior facilities welcomed such a program, Daniel founded "Senior Connects."  Daniel's acts of philanthropy were recently highlighted in the Youth Serve America's national newsletter.  He has received several awards for his good works.  Congratulations to an outstanding young Hoosier philanthropist!
