Celebrate National Philanthropy Week
Organizations across Indiana are invited to celebrate National Philanthropy Week, November 15-22, by planning activities which engage young people in giving and serving.  YPII is developing resources to help promote the importance of growing new generations of philanthropists, such as an op-ed piece and a sample community proclamation that will soon appear on our Web site, http://www.ypin.org.  In the meantime, make plans to celebrate youth philanthropy in your community with promotion and action.

Young Hoosier Philanthropists: Kids Caring & Sharing Participants
The philanthropic spirit is alive and well in Indiana's schools and students, despite difficult times.  During the 2008-2009 school year, youth helped raise $617,770.18 for Riley Hospital as part of the Indiana Association of School Principals' (IASP) Kids Caring & Sharing Project.  A final count revealed that more than 600 schools collected funds through a variety of activities to generate gifts to the hospital for children.

Said Gerald W. Mohr, executive director at IASP, "We are so proud to provide opportunities for school-aged children to serve those in need.  It is a humbling gift to see students selflessly donating.  They not only help ill children, but also support a hospital working to prevent disease and treat young patients regardless of their ability to pay."

For all the change collected, rope jumped, laps ran, baked goods sold, and hat days purchased . . . we say thanks!

I Remember, I Serve: September 11
This September 11, Americans across the nation will remember the tragic events of 2001, and serve in their communities to honor the day's victims and heroes.  Individuals looking to lend a hand can visit http://www.serve.gov/sept11.asp to find a volunteer opportunity, or download tools to create their own service project.  Organizations can also recruit volunteers by posting their 9/11 service projects on Serve.gov's database.

For additional service ideas, consult Youth Service America (YSA), the official youth partner of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. YSA offers its experience in engaging children and youth by outlining eight lessons learned from the event, and related ideas for service and service-learning projects.  Read YSA's "8 for 9/11"

Pay It Forward Mini Grants

Pay It Forward Mini Grants are designed to fund one-time-only service-oriented projects identified by youth as ways to benefit their school, neighborhood or greater community. Projects must contain a "pay it forward" focus - that is, they must be based on the concept of one person doing a favor for others, who in turn do favors for others, with the results growing exponentially - to be considered in the grantmaking process.  Applications for the fall semester are being accepted through September 15. www.payitforwardfoundation.org/educators/mini-grant.html
