  • How can a community attempt to counter the "me-first" attitude and materialism that seems to pervade our culture?
  • How can the involvement of young people in communities work to break down barriers, both generational and socioeconomic, and build trust?
  • What will make young people choose to be philanthropists and professionals in the independent sector tomorrow?

The answer for many communities in Indiana is youth engagement in philanthropy.

Through joint efforts of over 30 philanthropic and youth-serving organizations that make up the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana (YPII), this state is carrying out a multi-faceted campaign to engage young people and their families in giving and serving their communities. Through the resulting connectedness, a broad cross-section of young people have an interest, a voice, and a role in building their communities. The youth exposed to philanthropic principles will be more likely as adults to contribute and consider careers in the nonprofit sector.

As the new century unfolds and technology provides opportunities for many to take a more active and individualized role in philanthropy, the demands on the independent sector to be more inclusive are real and valid. The joy of “being a philanthropist” is no longer only in the realm of the rich and influential but the experience of giving – whether it is of time or talent or financial resources – should be available to all individuals.

Promoting and educating a diverse population of youth about the concepts of philanthropy (giving and serving within their classrooms, communities and society) is the central theme of the YPII Philanthropy Immersion Project. Through schools, faith- and community-based organizations, and in families, a young person will learn about and experience various elements of philanthropy. Not only will the project involve a collaboration of community partners, but also will be evaluated by a nationally renowned institution – The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

The resources available through partners in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana and other providers will, for the first time, be available collectively to an identified group of individuals. If proven successful, the YPII Philanthropy Immersion Project is introducing a strategy that could be replicated on a statewide (and eventually national) basis.

For children living in Indiana today, there are good, but limited, opportunities to

    • help them become aware of philanthropy and its relevance in their own lives
    • engage them as active participants and leaders in philanthropy and in their community.
