Youth as Resources in United Way
Youth as Resources of Central
Indiana (YARCI) provides small grants on a competitive basis
to youth groups that have designed and will implement volunteer
community service projects. Grants assist with materials, supplies,
and transportation related to the service projects, as well as recognition
of the young volunteers. YARCI is a youth/adult partnership and
is a program of United Way of Central Indiana.
County-level youth/adult boards in Marion, Boone,
Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks and Morgan Counties review grants,
personally screen applicant groups and make final grant decisions.
A multi-county YARCI Board sets policies and procedures for the
six counties. Grantmaking boards average 55% youth, and are generally
co-chaired by youth and adults.
Funding for YARCI's operating costs and most project
grants comes through the United Way annual campaign. Project grant
funds are also raised through foundations, corporate sponsorships,
service organizations and individual donors. In 2008, YARCI funded
149 youth-led projects, involving 4,413 youth volunteer project
participants.
